What Protection Is Trying to Say
A different way of meeting resistance.

A change in the question
When someone pulls away, intellectualizes, becomes defensive, or struggles to follow through, it can be tempting to ask how to stop the behavior. Another question may be more useful: what is this response trying to prevent?
Curiosity without assumption
Protection is a hypothesis, not a diagnosis. What appears to be avoidance may also be disagreement, exhaustion, a mismatch in care, or a reasonable response to circumstances. We learn more when we approach behavior with curiosity and remain willing to be wrong.
Meeting the system
When a protective response no longer has to fight to be understood, the conversation can change. The goal is not to remove defenses on command. It is to create enough safety and choice that another response might become possible.
